Important note: if your natural texture is wavy, then you should definitely embrace your unique and beautiful hair. All hair textures have got their own unique elements of beauty and all hair textures should be embraced and celebrated. This article is for girls who have tighter textures but are unsure as to why their hair is no longer curling the way it used to.
Too much styling product
Too much product can weigh your hair down, causing the curls to stretch and become loose. Finding a balance in your product usage is just as crucial as the actual product you use.
Thick styling products
Your hair’s porosity will determine how your hair responds to thick products. If your hair is low porosity or fine, it is more likely to be weighed down by thick textured creams and styling products. If your hair is high porosity or coarse, it is more likely to handle thick products well.
Extreme product cocktails
Using too many products at a time can easily weigh your hair down. 2-3 products is generally a safe cocktail. If you choose to wear more than 3 products at a time, be extra mindful of how much of each product you use.
No clarifying
Clarifying is important not only for the health of curls, but also for definition! Buildup can weigh the curls down and stretch out definition. Generally, clarifying monthly is a good way to detox and reset your hair. You’ll notice a massive difference in lightness once you do this! Your hair is bounce up much easier thanks to no longer being weighed down by buildup. Check out my article on clarifying for more info!
Incorrect refresh
Using creams and gels are great for washday, however, they aren’t always the best refresh products. It’s good to keep your refresh products light to avoid buildup. Sprays are generally the best form of refreshing.
Where to go from here
Don’t be discouraged! Living life with textured hair is a journey that should be enjoyed. If you’re struggling with loose, stretched curls, don’t give up and instead try to focus on the health of your hair and the results will follow.
